Tävlingarna avgörs i Tjele efterskole, belägen i Viborg kommun i Danmark.
11 februari - Alexander Johansson segrade i Ebbe Cup
Resultat: 1. Alexander Johansson, Lunds ASK 4½; 2. Mattias Zachrisson, Lundby SS 4; 3. Lennart Uvhagen, Uddebo SK 4 poäng (31 deltagare).
8 februari - Ebbe Cup startar i Göteborg
Manhem Open is a tournament for the best players 15 years old or younger, from Sweden and neighbouring countries and is organized by the dynamic chess club SS Manhem of Gothenburg. This year two Polish wonder kids were invited: Dariusz Swiercz with a rating of 2274 at the age of 13 (!) and Aleksandra Lach with 2021 at 12 and the European champion among girls of her age and younger. After defeating second rated Simon Hänninger Dariusz had to give away half a point to our Alex defending himself diligently against the latter's attack. Winning his last game convincingly, however, against young Anderljung, at the same time as Hänninger and Alex defeated the local guy Johan Hansson and Lach respectively they crossed the finishing line in this order:
1. Dariusz Swiercz, Polen 6½
2. Simon Hänninger, Rockaden Stockholm 5½
3. Alexander Johansson, Lunds ASK 5
For a report in Swedish please go here and for complete results visit this site.
The competition distingushed itself positively for having a large board of results filled in beautifully, for starting each round on time and for giving out more beautiful and special trophies than in most cases. Another great plus (sincerely!) was they invited a young, low rated (1059) player to fill up the starting field in order to get even pairs. Mistakedly, however, this player, Polish-speaking Daniel Skorczynski happened to steal away toatally no less than two points from three different opponents! I can guarantee you he was not sad Saturday afternoon.

Hello uncles, aunties, cousins and friends! We have some good news for you here.
On October 14th 2007, in the beautiful city of Linköping, Alex became this year's Swedish school champion among students born in 1991 or 1992 having played convincingly right from the very first game. If you'd like to watch an appallingly good report (produced by the young and enchanting Krzymowska sisters) from that event please go to http://www.mittischack.se/ click on the link "Tidigare avsnitt => TRYCK HÄR" and then ""Episode: 169". Now click on the start button a couple of times, and on the cc button if you want English subtitling. To get directly to the event Skol SM just drag the slider to 11 minutes and 8 seconds. Alex will appear for he first time at about 12.22 wearing his brown leather jacket. NB. The above instructions have been changed on Oct 30th at 17:57.
For further info please see the organizers site at http://lass.no-ip.com/LASS/resultat/2007/skolsm/ Click on "Bilder" to see the pictures.
The event was echoed by six references on Google searching for Dammhagsskolan, which is the scool he attends currently.

Six points out of ten at Politiken Cup in Helsingör and officially back in Sweden from August 1st. Not so bad a thing neither of them! It is possible to examine all of Alex' games at http://politikencup.dk/ Just click on Gennemspil Partier up to the right and then choose round and player in the box below rhe chess board. Of special interest could be his encounter with world no. 42, Gabriel Sargissian, in the first round. A game which also was emitted directly over the web. Also the four won games against Wiwe, Flindt, Vas and Christensen were good examples of Alex' aggressive style at it's best.
As he was still registered as Italian his adventures was followed at a distance also from down there.
August 19th 2007
In this year's Festival Weekend of Bergamo Alex got in as number 5 out of 56 players and 4½ points from 6 possible ones. To be honest with a much weaker starting field than last year. Bad luck against young Stella but good luck against Marrone who made a fatal mistake under time pressure and finally a good humoured and tired draw in the last round. Alex was even mentioned in the 'Eco di Bergamo', here related for those who wish to test their Italian: "Presenti anche una decina di giovani rappresentati da Alexander Johansson, classe '92, svedese, residente con la famiglia a Leffe". Winner of the tournament was Alex' mysterious club pale Capata.
Verona Open, during the firsta days of the year, was an extremely well organized competition. After defeating a sad opponent in 19 moves in the B-tournament, unusuallay allowing paluers up to ating of 2250, Alex was put against one of those terribly stubborn players and finally got just a draw after 49 tiresome moves and got out for a hasty lunch with fever and throat ache. He himself proposed to retire from the competition, which seemed to be the best solution. Outstanding winner was the formidable Coratella, who is capacitated to magically transform any lost game into a win.
Riva del Garda offered a tournament between X-mas and New Year's Eve. The strating field was stronger than expected though no masters had been invited. Four points out of seven was OK though also five or should have been within reach. Not winning the game he should have won, against the Swiss Walter Trumph, he probably bled ELO-rating. At least he defeated his first WFM, though the latter somewhat on the decline. But it was like walking on dynamite, Alex said afterwards.
Alex started out the Crespi tournamnet in Mailand splendidly with his first win against a 2200 player and a superfast draw after 13 moves against Nanelli, 2189, in the second round and a new win against Barberi, 2149. In the fourth round be was unable to hold strong against the master Gazzaniga however and also young Magrini got his revenge for Aosta in the fifth round. So after a final draw in the sixth round he returned home with just three poor points. Winner of the competition was the suave Philippino Roland Salvador.

1. After losing the first game against a "beginner" five points out of six in a rapid chess (in this case 30 minutes for each player) competition in the village of Piadena was not bad at all.
2. 3,5 points out of six in an extremely hot Bergamo Alta was still better and surely gave Alex feeling of being on the go. http://www.chesslab.bergamo.it/bgOpenA.pdf
3. And finally 5 points out of 9 in Conca de la Presolana, Bratto, fulfilled that same impression. For the first time winning against players rated higher than 2100 and making a draw against a player of 2200. http://www.scaccobratto.com/cgi-bin/turni2_2006.cgi?&numero=11875&tipo=t
4. Invitation accepted to train with the Swedish top players under 20.
5. New Swedish rating from Septemebr 1st 2006: 2169. September 2nd 06

Alex won the B-tournament for players rated below 2000 at Ceriano Laghetto close to Saronno (MI). After a couple of mediocre tournaments he was very pleased to have won five games out of five against qualified opponents. This was only the second time, however, he stood as the final and total winner in a competition for adults. March 30th to April 1st 2006.
A game to be remberered played as a part of the "campionati italiani a squadre" in Bergamo Alta: I would call this THE OPPOSITE OF A MISTAKE!

Accidentally STROLLING ALONG THE WEB we fell on the FIDE Online world chess ranking where we found there is a Johansson, Alexander with world rank 49 956 and national rank (Italy) 1222. Not easy to know if that is good or bad. One thing for sure, however, is that he would not get on the last bus home if all those persons were lined up before him. On the other hand it's a releif to a father's heart he got in among the first 50 000!
FREEZING COLD AT THE PREMISES OF CS EXCELSIOR in Via Borgo St. Cateherina, Bergamo. Due to the exceptionally cold Italian winter the water pipes had frozen on Sunday of the first weekend when the players came back for round two and three. This explains jackets, scarves and caps. Alex ended up with 3½ points loosing to Philippine FM Salvador (below) and hard fighting Vincenzo with roughly speaking the same rating as himself and making a technical draw with Impellizzeri (opponent's time but no pieces left). This after a serious mistake. The two latest mentioned games after having implied strong attacks all the way, as so many times before. Jan 14th/15th and 21st/22nd
Roland Salvador opening with d4.
FOUR POINTS WITH THE FLU. Out of seven in rapid tournament (2x15 min). The new year started out badly. Arriving at picturesque Castagneta, close to Bergamo Alta, what was believed to be a simple cold turned out to be a genuine influenza with high fever and cold sweats. In spite of this and in spite of being one bishop up Alex agreed on a draw with Italian wonder boy an year mate Alsecchi rated close to 2000 (below) both players having just seconds left. Jan 6th 06.

CONGRATULATIONS. Finally got his well merited FIDE ELO today:1850; Swedish rating by Jan 1st: 1889; Italian Semi lampo rating (rapid): 1908. Jan 4th 06.

ENCHANTED AT NICE. Startled out of his dedicated studies Alex came to Nice and fell in love with the setting of that city. Maybe this contributed to loosing his first three games. After a coldish and expensive tour on top of a double decker and a ride on the big wheel of Jardin Albert 1er close to the hotel, he won the remaining four ones, however. Most remarkable was the very last one where his opponent’s plus 200 rating was of no use. Alex was in command all through the game. Dec 26th through 30th 05.

It was not the first time Alex was CONFRONTED WITH AN IM but the first time he was close to defeating one. Sitting down to his first game without having checked on whom he was to encounter, just supposing it was a guy from the “upper half”, he started out with a laid back attitude and was apparently winning till he made a mistake after having exchanged most pieces. The German IM, worth 2352 rating points, took a deep breath and lost no time bringing the game home. Nov 18th 05.

At Corsico, all surrounded by SUBURBAN MAILAND, and possessing an impressive modernistic church, Alex played one of his more impressive games ever giving evidence of what use knights are as well as the meaning of sacrifice. Unfortunatley loosing a top game on table nr 1 of the B-group, agreeing on two draws in one of which he traded his stronger position against his lack of time, he came in as nr. 6 out of 38 in a tournament he “could as well” have won. In the extremely WELL ORGANIZED COMPETITION AT BRATTO, one of the last towns of prealpine Val Seriana, and which extended over not less than eight days, Alex, after an initial draw, applied the method loose-win-loose and thus toook 3,5 points out of eight. It might be he got a bit confused by the presence of the Italian Campeonato Femminile nearby:-) The B tournament essentially comprised players rated between 1800 and 2000 but was tremendously strong within that layer. Most remarkable for Alex was a won game that ended after just 13 moves. Aug 29th 05.

Alex’ FIRST GENUINELY INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT after almost three months without competing. After three wins it took the final winner Marco Brugo to stop him. Following this he maybe got too hot against experienced player Giovanni Brunelli who could settle a chess mate moving his rook to line 8 while Alex had eyes exclusively for the attack of his own. After a win in the final round he ended up with four points out of 6 and postition nr 7. July 29th 05.

In his LAST SWEDISH TOURNAMENT at Laholm, which town has the advantage of letting me visit my young aunt Greta, Alex with more than 300 more in rating took “just” 3 points compared to last year’s 4. That’s chess I suppose! One of those 3 in a game which could very well have won a beauty prize, had there been one, against Anders Hansen. Also a memorable lost game against Anders Sandström, where two rooks applied a waist-lock on each other squeezing a tiny pawn into lemonade in between and where a double pawn turned out to be the way to victory for the chess playing journalist. Also remarkable to us hooligans and to many players was the participation in this tournament of former world nr. 4 Ulf Andersson. I so much regret my camera did not have time to come with us.

1.e4 c5 Following e4 I did my favourite opening 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 Here I played favourite variation of the Sicilian defence: the Kan variant. 5.Bd3 Prepares for castling and at the same time the bishops develop into an aggressive square aiming at an attack on the King's wing. 5...Bc5 6.Nb3 Ba7 Altenatively you can move the bishop to E7. 7.Qg4 Nf6 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qh6 Bxf2+ Here I was in doubt if to do Txg2 or Lxf2.I did Lxf2 however, because that way my opponent gets an open position of the king and at the same time a weak pawn on E4. Anyway there's no way he can strike the bishop on F2. 10.Kf1 Nc6 11.e5 Nxe5 12.Bxh7 I did not expect this move 12...Rh8 13.Qf4 Neg4 14.Bd3 Ba7 15.h3 Qb6 16.Nc3 Nh5 17.Na4 After the game Bo Plato told me I was in for gaining his queen after 17.Sh2 but I can find no solution after 18. Instead I here did 17.Df2 since I believed that would lead me to a win after 18.Dxf2 Sxf2 19.Th2 Sg3 17...Qf2+ 18.Qxf2 Nxf2 19.Rh2 Ng3+ 20.Ke1 Nxd3+ maybe I should have done Sg4 but I would not know what to do after Lf4 I21.cxd3 Bg1 22.Bf4 Bxh2 Here I failed to see the alternative Sb6 23.Nb6 Rh5 24.Nxa8 Rf5 25.Bc7 Rf1+ 26.Kd2 Rf2+ 27.Ke3 Rf5 28.Nb6 Nf1+ 29.Rxf1 Rxf1 Afterwards I got to think of Lxc7 30.Bxh2 1-0

Lund Open, 2005
1.e4 c5 2.c3 I had prepared for he Najdorf variation of the Sicilian defence. So this was quite a surprise to me. 2...d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.d4 cxd4 5.cxd4 Nc6 6.Nf3 e5 The sharpest variation since it, if white striking the peasant on e5, will be followed by e.g. 7.dxe5 Dxd1 8.Kxd1 Lg4 then long castling and an awful pressure on the peasant of e5. 7.Nc3 Bb4 8.Be3 I had in mind something like 8.Ld2 Lxc3 9.Lxc3 exd4 10.Sxd4 Sf6 and a liquidation where subsequnet developing moves arise. 8...exd4 9.Nxd4 Nf6 10.a3 Bxc3+ 11.bxc3 0-0 Here I used several moves according to the rule for searching for weaknesses of the opponent's position and I then found the following Te8,Sg4,Dxg2,Dxf2# and then saw that white's weaknesses were f2 and g2 though c3 and a3, too, are weak points. I also noticed there was an open centre and where I know these pieces are of greater importance. White will get problems developing his forces and find a secure place for his king at the same time as my half open d and e lines look unpleasant for him. 12.Be2 Qxg2! I was very pleased with this move since the opponent's king gets exposed in the centre without castling yet and no longer having a secure place to castle to. 13.Bf3 Qh3 14.Nxc6 bxc6 15.Bxc6 Bg4 16.Qd4 Rac8 17.f3?? Rfd8! In order not to let the king escape via d2. 18.Qf4 Rxc6 19.fxg4 Re6 0-1

David vs Goliath? At least if you consider nr. 8 player in HSK compared to the guys on the left hand side of the table. Maybe also chesswise. But this time Goliat (Manhem 1) just got stung in his heel. Alex, at the top table, is to steel away a point from Simo Panas, and Axel Larsson half a point from the opponent of his. Viking Sigesgård whose feet do not reach down to the floor, is to loose here but reached four giant points in the tournament as a whole. |
